Paulo Augusto -
It is not a radical, socialist idea to say that, when someone works 40 hours a week, that person shouldn’t live in poverty.
We live in the richest country in the history of the world, and it is a national disgrace that there are millions of people who are forced to work two or three jobs just to pay their bills.
That is why, in the first week of the new Congress, I intend to re-introduce my legislation to raise the federal minimum wage from $7.25 an hour to $15 an hour.
Say you’re with me:
My bill has 29 co-sponsors in the Senate and more than 170 members of the House,I believe that, from day one, Democrats in Congress must move forward with a progressive agenda to win the support of the American people.
And a $15 minimum wage is not only a popular idea and the right and moral thing to do, it is good policy.
This legislation would give more than 40 million low-wage workers a raise, more than 25 percent of the U.S. workforce. The average worker who would benefit from the bill is more than 35 years old.
Raising the minimum wage would also give a particularly significant boost to women and minority workers.
Today in America, more than half of all African-American workers and nearly 60 percent of Hispanic workers earn less than $15 an hour. And the majority of low-wage workers in this country are women, more than 20 million of whom would get a raise if we passed this bill.
You may not know this, but there is also a direct correlation between healthy babies and higher wages. University researchers have found that every $1 increase in the minimum wage leads to a 2 percent reduction in the risk of a mother having a baby with low birth weight.
Poverty causes stress. Stress causes illness. Decent wages in this country will keep our people healthier.
But this bill does more to make sure these changes are permanent. Because the reality is that if the minimum wage in this country had kept pace with inflation and labor productivity since the late 1960s, it would be almost $30 an hour today. So my bill indexes the minimum wage to median wage growth after it takes full effect in 2024.
It also eliminates the loophole that allows tipped workers and workers with disabilities to be paid substantially less than the federal minimum wage. It also phases out the youth minimum wage, another loophole that allows employers to pay workers under 20 years old a lower wage for their first 90 calendar days of work.
All across the country, workers are standing up and demanding fairer wages — and they are winning.
Since 2012 when striking fast-food workers launched “The Fight for $15,” Seattle, Minneapolis, Washington, D.C., California, New York, and Massachusetts have all raised the minimum wage to $15 an hour. And workers at places like Amazon have made their voices heard and won a $15 minimum wage as well.
I believe that, if we all make our voices heard, we can win a raise for working families everywhere in this country.
And that starts with you:
and I suspect that number will get much higher when the new Congress is sworn in.
Add your name to theirs in support of this important legislation.
In solidarity,
Bernie Sanders
